A few thoughts from the conference. Andrew G posed the questions
What impact are the media having on our society?
What impact can people of faith have on the media?
This is not an exhaustive summary of some of the points. Add your own recollection to this thread perhaps?
1. Do the faith media community set themselves up as 'separate' from the rest of the media where those with no faith in the media don't perceive this?
2. Church members & leaders are fearful of the new technology - whilst feeling obliged to use it but don't know how and worry about the impact and security when they do
3. If the license fee goes then will we lose the last bastion of impartial reporting?
4. Dichotomy : Barriers are down on route to audience compared to 20 years ago - no longer the only route being via gatekeepers at the big 3. But in this new world order, there are such a myriad of outlets that how can audiences find the material we have produced and put online?
5. We must consider the pull technology paradigm versus the old technology of push broadcasting - making media available for people to find and pull when they want it, rather than us choosing to push it at them. This should impact our production processes.
6. That we must present ourselves as 'one person' across the media networks we have representation on. Too easy to invent a persona per service we are registered on or have a route to audience via.
7. We should consider to be 'of excellence' as we produce / appear in our media, and happen to be a Christian in it.
8. That evangelical Christians should be in the media otherwise a false perception that all Christians are of a similar type can be propagated which isn't true.
9. Despite the global village nature of the world proper human to human relationship still matters - that is where trust is built to get content from producers past the gate keepers onto media outlets. Example of Christian radio spot producers getting content onto non religious local radio channels.
10. We still need good writing at the source of the media we create - despite the multiplicity of media forms now available to us.
11. There isn't that much prejudice between people in mainstream media and the world of Christianity, but there does appear to be a large amount of ignorance.
12. Perhaps the issue is that 'the media' is neutral but its how we use it.
There are plenty of other thoughts that were shared at the end of the conference which I have not noted down so you may want to add your own thoughts, or challenge / endorse / develop the thoughts here.
